Seminar Final Assignment

Yes I believe their is a community on social media. I believe it exist's by the people you hang around or the people you follow. For example, if I wanted to know everything about the NBA I would follow the "NBA on ESPN" on twitter and Stephan A. Smith. You can make so many great connections on social media and I plan on doing this throughout my college experience.

My community on social media is easy, all about sports. I follow all my favorite teams on twitter and the best sports reporters for the updates.

Thank you Mr. Lawhead for a great semester and all your tips!

3 Game Winning Streak

The Memphis Grizzlies have been on a roll recently, they have won 3 games in a row! The exciting part about all that, they have been away from home. This was one of the Grizzlies biggest weaknesses last season, trying to win on the road. The Grizzlies finish off their 4 game road trip tonight vs the Golden State Warriors. Tonight could mark the first 4 game winning road streak in the Grizzlies history as a franchise!

Golden State's best player, Stephen Curry will miss tonights game with an concussion but for the Grizzlies their defensive stopper Tony Allen will also miss the game with an suspension.

Let's hope the Grizzlies can continue their winning ways into the all star break! For the final time this semester.....Grizz Nation signing off!

Review Paper over CBS Sports and ESPN

The two websites I decided to use for my compare and contrast essay were CBS Sports and ESPN. I chose these two for multiple reasons. Both of these websites have amazing designs. There pictures/videos, their font and there formatting are unbelievable. Another big reason why I chose these websites is because of the great content both of them offer you. If you are a sports fan, and it doesn’t matter what sport it is, these two websites will give you everything you need to know about your favorite team. While both ESPN and CBS Sports websites successfully attract all the sports fans around the world with their content and especially design, ESPN’s more professional design and ease of navigation surpassed the more difficult to use and confusing audio pop-ups of CBS’s sports site.
Some basic background I found on the ESPN website is that ESPN Inc. owns the website, with the Walt Disney Company having an 80% share, along with Hearst Corporation having the other 20%.
The famous ESPN TV station opened on September 7, 1979 with its famous slogan, “The Worldwide Leader in Sports”, invented on the same day. The first broadcast was “Sports Center” with its famous musical background “Da-Da-Da.. Da-Da-Da”.
Their headquarters are in Bristol, Connecticut. The web site launched in July 1993 as the first major on line site for all sports fans. In May 2002 the site began offering a Broadband platform for high-speed connections. If you love sports and you have a favorite team in a specific sport, ESPN.com can provide you anything you want.
I also found some great background on the CBS Sports website. Michael Levy is the owner of the site, along with David Beeston being the president of CBS Sports. This website started life as Sports Line USA in February 1994, becoming known as CBS Sports Line after been acquired by CBS. It changed to its current name, CBS Sports.com, in August of 2007.
CBS headquarters are just a little south of ESPN’s; they are located in New York City. The biggest difference that I am going to talk about in regards to the two websites is ESPN covers all the major sports around the world, such as; baseball, basketball, football etc. while on the other hand, CBS Sports likes to cover mainly college basketball and football, but will cover the other sports sparingly.
ESPN’s website has an absolute amazing design, usability and content. ESPN’s design, in my opinion, is as good as any website can be. Their pictures and videos really appeal to sport fans. If you would like to watch highlights of the game you missed the other night, ESPN has it for you. If you would like to see screenshot pictures of the game you missed last night, ESPN has it covered for you. My main disappointment with their website is that every video you click on will have a video advert before the piece will run. It doesn’t matter what ESPN video you click on all of them have ads.
Their color scheme might be a little old fashioned to some younger viewers out there but to me personally the red and white color scheme fits perfectly. Personally, one of the amazing things that I like about ESPN.com is the usability of the website; it’s so easy to navigate through. Every time you look around on the ESPN account and you want to find more information about a specific topic you are interested in, it’s literally just a couple of clicks away.
CBS Sports is very similar to ESPN when it comes to their design, usability and content. There pictures/videos are similar to ESPN in lots of ways; it also has an advert before every video runs. It is different in one significant way though; ESPN has more highlights of the games from the previous evening while on CBS Sports, there is more time for the analysts talking about last night’s games. They will give their own opinions on what they saw and also tell you what they expect for future games.
The CBS color scheme is a little boring and dull wit, instead of Red and White for ESPN; CBS Sports has Blue, Black and White. In my opinion this is more prominent than the ESPN website color scheme. CBS Sports also has amazing usability across the website. In my opinion though there navigation throughout the website requires a little bit more work on the person looking on their website than with ESPN. CBS Sports makes you open up more pages on your computer to look into stories. Some viewers might find this confusing and a little bit unnecessary.
ESPN’s website is unbelievably fast when it comes to clicking on new stories and/or headlines. With ESPN’s website you can easily be looking at one video, then decide to click on a story on the same page and ESPN will immediately take you to that story in under 2 seconds. ESPN also has a great app for smart ‘phones. The app can literally do anything the actual website can do, with the same level of quality. The videos are available for HD just like the website and in my personal opinion; the app is a better option than the website because people aren’t around a computer 24/7 like they are around their ‘phones. The app is just a perfect thing to have for your ‘phone.
CBS Sports is like ESPN when it comes to their speed quality. Like I said earlier though, you have to have more pages open to find what you want on CBS Sports; so of course, it will take a little bit longer. CBS Sports is also like ESPN when it comes to providing an app; they have one available for smartphones. My opinion though, is that their app isn’t as strong as ESPN’s. To me, their website gives you more flexibility on what you can look up than their app does.
To conclude my review paper, I would like to say that both websites are absolutely amazing. If I really had to choose one that I would go on more often or even have a chance to work for, I would choose the ESPN website. ESPN has just a little bit more design in there website along with better usability, so you can navigate throughout their website more swiftly. It is also has an amazing app for smartphone users. Similarly, I would also like to conclude that the CBS Sports website is very close in quality and usability. CBS, in my opinion, actually have a better color scheme than the ESPN account, but I just feel like the ESPN account gives you a better way to get to the stats, videos, and information you need to find out about your favorite sport teams, all around the world.

Seminar Post

I personally have learned a lot from Mr. Lawhead's Freshman Seminar class. He has taught me new ways to use social media. He showed me how to make lists on twitter and how to connect with all the people out their in the world. It is very important to make connections at College so it can help you get a job out there. I believe the different activities we have done in class through social media will help me get a job after college.

My goal in life is to become a Sports Broadcaster and I know I have to use social media with that job. I believe Mr. Lawhead's tips on social media will for sure help me in the long run in becoming a successful Sports Broadcaster.

Zach Randolph Baby

This evening I was at the Memphis Grizzlies game with my father for the first time this season. We ended up losing 99-84 against the New Orleans Pelicans. In reality the final score could have been a lot worse. In one point of the game in the third quarter the Pelicans had a lead of 27 against the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies showed absolutely know passion or fight tonight. The offense is very stagnant and it seems whatever the new Coach is trying to do, it's obviously not working yet!

A surprise came half way between the 1st quarter though, superstar forward Zach Randolph got informed his fiancé was expecting to deliver. Like any father would do, he left the arena asap and headed to the hospital. My wishes go out to Zach and his future family on a great life together but I hope he can put the Grizzlies a close second in his life because the team needs him desperately.

Signing off feeling very sad, mad and disappointed! Go Grizz!

Manifesto; Steroids in the game of Baseball

We the Major League baseball Gods and fans demand that players all around the world stop taking steroids and/or performance enhancing drugs. We feel like it’s a disgrace to baseball. Baseball has been around for hundreds of years and just now in the past 30 years or so, it’s starting to be classified, not as baseball, but as steroid baseball. Some of the greatest hitters of all time, who us fans thought were real class acts of the game, have announced they took steroids and/or performance enhancing drugs. Players like Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez and possibly many more.
Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Alex Rodriguez have been the recognized faces of baseball for the past 20 years. These three men have changed the state of baseball forever. Barry Bonds is the all time leader in Home Runs, with 756, but now baseball analysts and journalists think that more than half of his home runs were delivered with the help of steroids and/or performance enhancing drugs, even though it appears he will never admit to it.
So it goes for Mark McGwire; in 1998 he hit 70 regular season Home Runs. This had never happened before. Not surprisingly, a couple of months later he admitted to taking steroids.
Next up is Alex Rodriguez. This summer there was a story that surfaced about a company in Florida called Biogenesis that apparently came to A-Rods house, during the offseason, and injected him with steroids. Of course A-Rod flatly rejects all the rumors and has declined to comment further. Four months, later the Major League Baseball committee found evidence that A-Rod did indeed get injected with steroids and have decided to suspend him for over 200 games. With MLB’s perplexing rule allowing a player to appeal any suspension, A-Rod has chosen to go down that road and is now going through the appeals process, while still being able to play baseball all summer.
Alex Rodriguez is the only person in Major League Baseball history to be suspended for more than 50 games due to more offenses with steroids. We the baseball Gods and fans of the world demand that baseball goes back to its grassroots way of playing before the game gets tainted forever.         We demand if you get caught taking steroids and/or performance enhancing drugs you will be given a minimum of 100 games suspension. With that punishment, if you are a first time offender, we demand that you go on national television and plead for your forgiveness. If this is your second time being caught with taking performance enhancing drugs you will sit out a 150 game suspension, plus take part in community service for at least 200 hours. Finally for your third time being caught as an abuser, you will receive a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball, plus a hearing in court as to whether you should also receive jail time.
We, the Gods and fans of baseball, strongly suggest you stop taking these banned substances before you lose your chance to ever play baseball again and even possibly, losing your freedom. We ask you this one simple question, is it worth risking your baseball career and possibly your life for one injection of steroids into your body or swallowing one pill of a performance enhancing drugs? I think most people in this world would say no, if they were being honest.
The game of baseball is supposed to be for all ages. For example when you are growing up as a young child you start off doing Tee-ball. You then slowly progress to live pitch from your Coach. Next, is possibly playing Little League baseball and getting a chance to be on national television at the Little League Championships in Pennsylvania. After that, the final two steps to make it to the MLB are High School ball and College Baseball. You are basically giving all your life to become a Major League baseball player and you have one injury and you say to yourself; “I don’t think I can come back as strong as I use to be, so I’m going to take steroids and risk throwing everything away I tried for the most.” Steroids and/or performance enhancing drugs are not worth it and should not be tolerated under any circumstance in the game of baseball!
The motto has always been for the baseball Gods and fans of the world, “IF YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE IT, WE’RE COMING TO GET IT!” This is a message for all the young kids out there who are trying to become Major League Baseball players, please stay clean and lets take the game of baseball back to what it once was. It’s crucial that we, the Gods and fans of the baseball world, teach the young, future MLB players the right way to play the game.
In this spirit we have decided to hold a summer camp in Orlando, Florida from July 6th through August 2nd that will teach you not to take steroids, what steroids can do to your body, and how to be a professional ball player in the Major Leagues. The camp is free for ages 5-12 and for ages 12-18 it will be $200 for the whole month. We hope you decide to take this opportunity to come to our camp and learn how to be a clean, drug free professional ball player. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Ryan Glover at 901-298-9876 or at his email rglover@yahoo.com.
Hopefully I will see you guys this summer in Orlando!

Tayshaun Prince situation

Coming off the heels of a tremendous preseason performance from Quincy Pondexter in which he showed growth in his game, reports are beginning to surface that Q may indeed be the starting small forward for the Grizzlies come October 30th against the Spurs. But what will that mean for Tayshaun Prince, who according to Ron Tillery of the Commercial Appeal has yet to play this preseason due to a stomach bug?

There are rumors going around that ESPN are reporting that the Grizzlies are trying to trade the veteran Prince sometime through the season. Questions will be asked like, "why trade a guy who you got not even a year ago"? "why trade a guy who got you to the Western Conference Finals last year"? Trust me all fare questions to ask but the NBA is a business, Quincy is in his prime right now and has showed amazing growth this preseason. On the other half with Prince, he is 33 and in his last year under contract for the Grizzlies.

All will be answered soon when the NBA season tips off in 5 days! Grizz nation signing off!

10 days until the season starts

The season finally begins in 10 days for the Memphis Grizzlies. They will start there season on the road vs the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are the team who knocked off the Grizzlies last year in the Western Conference Finals. Big expectations surround the Grizzlies this season. People have questioned this offseason was it the right move to fire there Coach, Lionel Hollins. The front office in the long run it was the right decision. They decided to hire the lead assistant to Lionel, Dave Joerger.

The team itself though pretty much stayed the same. They resigned starting shooting guard Tony Allen and signed back up shooting guard and one time Grizzly Mike Miller. Questions still surround the team like, "Are they deep enough to make a run for the title"? "What happens if Marc or Zbo gets injured"? All fare questions to ask but what it will come down to the most is, was it the right decision to fire there past Coach, Lionel Hollins and bring in rookie NBA head coach Dave Joerger. All these questions will be answered in 10 days when the Grizzlies take on the raining Western Conference Champion, San Antonio Spurs.

Profile Blog; Eric Sebastian

Eric Sebastian was born February 16th 1972 in Columbus Ohio. He grew up loving Ohio State basketball and football. His father had season tickets for the Ohio State basketball team. He remembers especially one night when he was around 7 years old his first ever game at Ohio State. It was against Ohio State’s biggest rival, Michigan. He said it was so loud and amazing he had to cover his ears for most of the game. His biggest dream growing up in Ohio was hopefully getting to play basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
He moved to a little town close to Dallas Texas when he was 11. He knew his options were slim now but he still hoped one day he could return to Ohio State and play basketball. It was his junior year in high school and he was playing basketball for his high school team in Dallas and his dreams and hopes came to an immediate halt; he tore his ACL going up for a dunk. Eric knew now that any hope of trying to get a scholarship from Ohio State to play basketball was dead. His knee was absolutely torn up and his dreams were destroyed.
It was his senior year in high school and Eric still wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life. In his heart he still thought he had a chance to play basketball but he knew every day that was really just turning into a dream. So one night him and his family sat down to discuss his college plans and his lifetime goals. Eric was still completely uncertain what he wanted to do until his dad brought up a great idea. He told Eric that since you love sports so much why not go study Sports Management at Southern Methodist University so you can be around basketball all the time. Eric agreed with his father and decided to attend SMU in the fall.
Eric loved his time at SMU and being apart of SMU basketball. His senior year he got asked by SMU’s basketball coach, Larry Brown, if he would like to join the staff as a player assistant and help the players. Eric’s days of being a college student were coming to an end and he didn’t have any jobs lined up or even any internships. He started to panic and wasn’t sure what he was going to do with his life until one Saturday afternoon.
That Saturday afternoon in July he received a call from the Jerry Jones, the President and General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry asked Eric if he would like to join the Dallas Cowboys media relation’s office as an intern that coming fall when the Cowboys were going to start the season. Eric didn’t hesitate; he took the job and started working that fall. Eric was more than happy to finally have a job in sports but he knew he wanted to be around basketball and not football on a daily basis. He was starting to think would his dreams ever come true.
One year past and his time with the Cowboys was up. Jerry Jones decided to offer Eric another internship with the Cowboys for the following season but Eric declined. He decided to go for his goals and do everything in his power to get to the NBA some how and work for an NBA franchise. That night when he got home he started calling all the NBA teams asking if they had any jobs or internships in their media relations department. He didn’t get through to any teams; he left voicemails for all 32 teams hoping to get a call back from just one. Two nights later the Denver Nuggets called him back and said we have a job here and we would like you to come for an interview next week.
He arrived in Denver that Friday night for his interview the next day. Eric decided to go down to the bar that night and relax and get prepared for his interview tomorrow morning. When he got down to the bar he saw this beautiful lady sitting by herself, Eric decided to go up to her and talk to her. They had a couple of drinks and agreed they had to do this again very soon.
The next morning he headed down to the Nuggets organization for his interview. The Nuggets absolutely fell in love with Eric and gave him the job. That night he called Natalie (the lady at the bar) and asked her if she would like to go out and celebrate with him. She said yes and amazingly 5 months later they got married.
Eric worked with the Denver Nuggets media relations department from 1994 through 2009, including a six-year stint (2003-2009) as the department’s Director. In those 14 years he helped the Nuggets direct several successful campaigns for players receiving NBA All-Star and All-NBA honors, including Marcus Camby who earned the 2006-2007 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. He also worked on statistical projects for the Nuggets Coaches and Management and assisted in the process of free agent recruiting. On a regular day-to-day basis he got to see some of the greatest players and coaches throughout the NBA including Denver’s own Coach George Karl and Nuggets NBA-All Stars Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson.
One January night in 2009 he received a call from his college roommate Jack Murphy (lead assistant to Coach Pastner) asking Eric if he would consider leaving the NBA and come to college to become the Memphis Tigers basketball Director of Operations. Eric was very hesitant at first, because he loved his current job with the Nuggets. The team was on a 7 game winning streak and getting closer and closer to reaching the playoffs. Eric told Jack to give him a week and I’ll get back with you. Three days later Eric received another call, this time from the Coach himself Josh Pastner. Coach Pastner repeatedly told Eric that Memphis wants you here, the fans want you here and especially I want you here. Eric took the job and is still to this day the director of operations at the University of Memphis.
His role with the Tigers is much different than it was with the Nuggets. In his role with the Tigers, Eric deals with all of the program's external and internal operations. He actually gets to attend all the Tigers games at the Forum and most of them on the road. He helps the players on and off the court if they need him and most of all, he helps Coach Pastner with recruiting every year.
He loves his job now with the Tigers and he hopes he can help bring a National Championship to the University one day, but he hopes down the road he can get back into the NBA as either a General Manger or an Assistant Coach. Eric and his wife Natalie now have two sons: Kade and Braxton. Braxton, the older one of the two also has the same dream as his father, to hopefully one day become a General Manager in the NBA or even take over his dad’s job at the University of Memphis.

At the conclusion of the camp, the Grizzlies will treat fans to a free Open Practice at noon on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Ensworth School at the Devon Farms Campus.

Twitter list

I decided to make another twitter list but this time for sports. I'm a huge sports fan and I love all particular types of sports. I added my favorite teams to the list like the Memphis Grizzlies, Boston Red Sox, Manchester United and the Pittsburgh Steelers. I also decided to add some sports reporters to the list like Stephan A. Smith and Marc Stein so I can know all the rumors and trades going around in the NBA.

Memoir

The Day I Will Never Forget
Five years ago when I was 13 years old my family and I decided to go on our summer vacation to England to visit our family, because unfortunately at the time my grandmother was sick. We didn’t know what exactly was wrong with her, so we wanted to go see her just in case something serious was actually wrong. In the first two days we were there we found out everything was okay and that she would be just fine. It was exciting for my parents and I because we hadn’t been back over in England for almost 6 years and I could barely remember any of it having been so young last time I was there. That night my uncle Howard called and said he had passes for a tour around the famous soccer ground, Old Trafford which happens to be where my favorite soccer team plays, Manchester United. I said absolutely, of course I’ll come with you. So that next morning turned out to be the day I will never forget.
Howard picked me up around 8:00am and we got to the famous ground Old Trafford around 8:40am. The tour didn’t start until 9:00am so we decided to go across the street to Dunkin Donuts for a coffee and a donut. Nine O’ clock couldn’t come any quicker I was so excited I could barely hold my emotions inside. The tour finally started and I walked into a stadium of over 75,000 seats and my uncle and I immediately took out our cameras and start taking pictures.
The first part of the tour was inside in the Trophy Room where we had a chance to look at all the trophies Manchester United have won, so far, in there amazing existence as a soccer club. We saw trophies like the Barclays Premier League trophy from 1998 and 2003, the FA Cup trophy from 1995 and 1999 and the Champions League trophy from 2000. They then took us into the player’s Locker Room where we were able to sit down in the player’s chairs and look into their lockers. I sat in my favorite players chair, David Beckham. He’s been an idol of mine ever since I started playing soccer, he basically was the only reason I started playing soccer and watching it all the time on the television.
Next, we went to the inside training facility they have at Old Trafford to meet some of the players. Unfortunately my favorite player, David Beckham wasn’t there but I saw players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young and Paul Scholes. Now it was time to take the tour back outside and tour the ground where the coaches/players sit during the game.
We made it outside and the skies above weren’t looking so good and I was worried because I thought it was about to storm and it all came true about 5 minutes later as it started to thunder and the rain was coming down extremely hard. The tour guide said “come inside and relax its only supposed to be a quick storm”. Howard asked the tour guide if it was okay if we could leave and asked the tour guide to call us when the tour was ready to start up again, she said of course just give me your number. So Howard and I decided to drive about 2 miles up the street to this famous restaurant called the Fish Bowl. We had their famous fish ‘n’ chips and talked about the day so far and how we hoped it would stop raining real soon. The rain went on longer than expected so we decided to look around the shops and relax. Two hours later we finally got the call from the tour guide to say the tour will be back on in the next twenty minutes. We rushed back to the stadium and got back with the group ready for the outside version of the tour.
The tour guide first gave us a lap around the whole stadium and then took us to the seats where the managers and players sat. I couldn’t believe I was about sit down in the same exact chair as the manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been sitting for almost 25 plus years. That became the icing on the cake for me that day, I thought to myself nothing that happens next could top off what just happened there. Well it turned out the day just got better. My hero, my idle David Beckham walked into Old Trafford right when the tour was over to start his training. I walked over to Mr. Beckham and asked him for his autograph and he said sure, absolutely and my uncle said we could stay and watch them train. I couldn’t believe I was 20 feet away from David Beckham and watching him play the game he and I loved so much. The day was an absolute success.
I knew right after that day was over I wanted to become a sports reporter and/or sports broadcaster. My Uncle Howard is a unbelievable sports reporter back in England and now that I am older and wanting to study to become what he is, he inspirers me every day to become a better writer and a better person. He does the entire major sporting events in England like big soccer matches, cricket matches, golf tournaments and the famous Wimbledon tennis tournament. He got a chance to do the Olympics last year in London and sent me plenty of pictures and a London Olympics book bag. He even got a chance to meet Michael Phelps and Roger Federer. It’s a shame though really that I don’t get to see him on a regular basis but my dream now is for one day him and I to work on a sports story together back home in England like the Wimbledon championship or the British Open.

Last years recap plus this years expectations

What a unbelievable year last year was for the Memphis Grizzlies, they finished the regular season with a 56-26 record and the 5th seed in the Western Conference after trading there leading scorer and play maker Rudy Gay away to the Toronto Raptors.

Nobody new what to expect when the playoffs came around and they were lined up to play there rivals again, the LA Clippers. They trailed in the series 2-0 and then eventually took the series by winning the next four games in a row. They then faced off against the Oklahoma City Thunder, they also got down in this series 1-0 but then they came back and won four straight again. Heading to the Western Conference Final for the first time in franchise history they played the San Antonio Spurs and got swept in four games.

This years expectations are even bigger for the Grizzlies but know one can really figure out what's going to happen after the shocking firing of their head coach Lionel Hollins. They decided to hire the head assistant David Joerger to be the next head coach. Player wise they added some great parts plus resigned some key players. They first added Kosta Kofus via a trade from the Denver Nuggets for Darrell Arthur, then they signed the veteran 3-point shooter Mike Miller and signed back up point guard Nick Calathes. They also brought back starting shooting guard/defensive stopper Tony Allen and back up shooter Jarred Bayless.

Big things are expected again for the Memphis Grizzlies, lets see if they can stay healthy and make that next push and play for the NBA Championship.
